Blantyre is hosting a two-day women’s volleyball party this weekend at the Blantyre Youth Center (BYC).
The inviting tournament with the theme “Breaking limits and living with passion” will take place from Saturday 30 September to Sunday 1 October.
Ten teams are expected to take part in the national event, four from the south and three from the north and center.
The Katoto queens, the Moyale ladies and the Eagles Craws ladies will represent the northern sector while the central area will feature the Kamuzu Barracks, Blue Eagles and Natural Resources College (NRC) ladies.
The host area (south) will parade the Blantyre gemz, the Hella girls and the Bangwe sisters. Regional qualifiers were held to select 10 teams.
Vice President of the Organizing Committee Fanney Kanyenda said: “The tournament aims to raise the standard of women’s volleyball in the country. It’s also about empowering women and promoting girls’ participation in sport, to avoid negative behaviors that could endanger their lives.”
The tournament is pegged at MK2 million kwacha which has been donated from well-wishers.
“We managed to raise that money from some kind individuals, but the door remains open for companies and individuals to come forward and support us,” Kanyenda said.
The champion will receive 500,000 kwacha MK while the second place team will pocket 350,000 kwacha MK.
MK250,000 will go to team number 3.
There will also be individual awards for best blocker, best receiver, best setter and best scorer.
The most valuable players as well as young and rising players will also be recognized.
