South Carolina began issuing tax returns to taxpayers this week. Qualified South Carolina taxpayers who file their returns by the October 17 deadline can expect to receive up to $800 in state tax credits before the end of the year.

Who will receive South Carolina income tax and how much?

South Carolina lawmakers approved the restoration program as part of the state budget in June. The rebate is based on your 2021 tax return and is limited to $800.

In an announcement this week, the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) said it has begun issuing refunds to eligible taxpayers. Who will receive a certificate?

SCDOR will issue refunds in the form of direct deposits and paper checks. Direct deposits will be sent to taxpayers who received their 2021 refunds through direct deposit, and the agency will use the same bank account to send the refunds.

On the other hand, paper checks will go to taxpayers who have notified SCDOR of a change in bank information by November 1. In addition, those who received their 2021 refund via credit card or check will also receive their refund via paper check.

Likewise, those who received their 2021 refund by direct deposit to a prepaid or cash-based credit card will also receive a paper check. Paper checks are being mailed to taxpayers who had a balance on their 2021 tax return and did not receive a refund and to those who received a 2021 refund through the tax preparer’s account.
