A Visakhapatnam startup has partnered with IIT-Madras to generate electricity from ocean waves.

Virya Paramita Energy (VPE) has signed a joint venture agreement with IIT-Madras, achieving a breakthrough in the renewable energy sector.

The team has developed what is called the ‘Ocean Wave Energy Converter’ or Sindhuja-1, to generate energy from waves.

According to a press release from IIT-M, “The system consists of a floating tank, a spar, and an electric module. The tank moves up and down as the wave moves up and down. A buoy is a hole in the middle that a long piece of wood called a spar can pass through.

“The spar can be anchored to the sea, and not be disturbed by the passing waves, while the buoy moves up and down and makes a relative motion between them. , the spar floats, and the chain of custody will maintain the system.”

This device is intended for isolated outdoor areas that require reliable electricity and communication – by providing power to loads installed directly in or on the machine, or by providing controlling nearby loads, such as the sea and the water column.

Oil and gas, defense and security industries, and telecommunications sectors are among the targets.

In November 2022, the company installed the device, six kilometers from the coast of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu and placed it at a depth of 20 meters.

“After good results in our first tests, we have set the goal of generating one MW of electricity from waves for commercial purposes by 2025,” said Sai Karthik Sunkara, the owner established the VPE. The Hindu.

“Divers and other specialized personnel are required for installation. It is very difficult to install and maintain this gadget in the water. Therefore, when designing any system, we must consider all these factors. Finally, the whole process becomes costly. .”

Ocean waves can generate power 24 hours a day, seven days a week with little to no battery storage.

It is suitable for marine monitoring, offshore desalination plants, drone charging, underwater vehicle loading, military, military ships, ports, and oil production. and gas.
