~Ensuring enhanced security, environment and reliability ~

Tata Steel Meramandali, located in Dhenkanal district in Odisha, has introduced a tippler wagon model with the use of advanced robots on Raw Material Handling System (RMHS) operations to eliminate the human-machine interface during the loading and unloading of wagons.

Peeyush Gupta, Vice President, Supply Chain and Group Strategic Procurement (Designate), Tata Steel and Subodh Pandey, Vice President, Operations, Tata Steel Meramandali officially inaugurated the tippler wagon model without humans here on 23 November 2022. With this new system , all loading and unloading and tipping operations are now automated. It has eliminated the human-machine interface thereby ensuring security and contributing to increased productivity.

Peeyush Gupta, Vice President, Supply Chain and Strategic Procurement Group (Designate), Tata Steel, said: “This achievement is a great example of how working in a team can solve a problem that seems to have no solution. This fool proof safety initiative is a classic example of Poka-Yoke. The innovations that have been implemented are first of their kind even for our Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar factories. RMHS is an area with many risks, and the team is continuously working to eliminate identified risks through various safety initiatives. This Tippler Wagon model will significantly reduce rake-unload cycle times in a safe manner.”

Subodh Pandey, Vice President, Operations, Tata Steel Meramandali, said: “We are continuously adopting the best available technology to upgrade facilities in our integrated steel operations to improve safety, the environment, productivity and reliability. This is an excellent illustration of the integration of advanced technology to solve all the tippler cart operating problems. The new system, installed on the Tippler II Wagon, will be implemented horizontally elsewhere as well.”

Rake tippling operations at RMHS steel mills involve critical activities that include separation, rotation, alignment, and coupling of carriages on the inhaul and outhaul sides. This is followed by cleaning the cart at last. The newly installed system includes automatic fall gates with laser curtains, robotic decoupling and coupling operations, intelligent access control within the tippler complex, cart cleaning system and automated side arm charging operation resulting in a significant reduction in high risk activities. The system is also equipped with a uniquely designed smart fence system with automatic gate locking facility to limit the entry of unauthorized persons during the operation of the equipment.
