Tata Steel Limited has issued its first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Steel Reinforcing bars (Rebar) used in Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) construction, as part of its commitment to become a benchmark in sustainability disclosure and to serve its customers with sustainability information product specifications . The EPD is a Type III eco-friendly label that transparently states the environmental impact of a product’s life cycle through various indicators. The EPD is a requirement in green building projects to score the required credit points as part of a building materials category and is also seen as a verified document in communicating the environmental impact of a product’s life cycle for disclosure purposes.

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies carried out to develop EPDs for steel products are carried out according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. LCA allows companies to evaluate the environmental performance of their products over their entire life cycle. This typically considers the entire value chain, from material extraction to product manufacture, the stage of use, and end-of-life impacts. The EPD is published in the International EPD System and can be accessed via https://environdec.com/library/epd5018.

Sanjiv Paul, Vice President (Safety, Health and Sustainability), said: “At Tata Steel, sustainability embodies our vision for a better future and shapes the ethos of all our endeavors. We continuously evaluate and develop our portfolio by absorbing environmental and social perspectives at every stage of the value chain. This EPD initiative is yet another effort to provide transparent environmental disclosure to our discerning customers and enable them to make sustainable choices while complying with global regulations. We will continue our journey to lead the sustainability discourse.”

In the coming years, Tata Steel will focus on securing eco-friendly labels (GreenPro and EPD) for its key products and maximizing its product coverage across locations under LCA to support customers with product-related sustainability disclosures. The Company has earned GreenPro certification (Type I eco-label) for many of its construction products.

In FY 2021-22, Tata Steel became the first steel reinforcement manufacturer to receive GreenPro certification for Tata Tiscon’s TMT rebar. Under this eco-label certification, all of Tata Tiscon’s reinforcement manufacturing facilities have been certified for all grades by the CII-Green Business Center (CII-GBC). GreenPro certified products are recognized in the Green Building Council of India (IGBC) rating system as well as by various government agencies (Chennai Metro, Delhi Metro, etc.). In Europe, the Company has produced more than 50 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its construction sector customers – a significant milestone in transparency and environmental impact reporting.

About Reinforcing Steel

Steel bars are usually used as reinforcement to provide tensile and shear strength to structures because concrete is weak in tension/shear. Steel is widely used as reinforcement because the coefficient of long expansion is close to that of concrete. Rebar’s main application is to reinforce concrete in end-use applications such as buildings, bridges, metros, dams, thermal power plants, fluid-retaining structures, etc.
