New Delhi: Tata Steel, on Saturday, launched the fourth edition of MaterialNEXT, the company’s open innovation event in the new materials domain.

The focus theme for this issue is ‘Materials to Wonder’ with the aim of gathering ideas around emerging materials and their unique applications, said a company statement.

The program will require two parallel tracks – the ‘Research Track’ will concentrate on concepts from major academic institutions and research facilities across India; and the ‘Start-up’ track will concentrate on start-ups emerging from incubator cells at the institute level.

Four key materials/technology subject areas have been introduced with the release of MaterialNEXT 4.0 – Applied Nanomaterials, New Composites, New Construction Materials and Energy Materials. Within each of these four theme areas, there are many predefined app-related issues, making it easy for participating teams to start registering ideas.

Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President, Technology & New Materials Business, Tata Steel, said, “At Tata Steel, we are continuously developing innovative solutions and breakthrough technologies across the steel value chain, leveraging our R&D strengths and collaborating with the wider community. . scientists, researchers, start-ups and industrial organizations. Our MaterialNEXT platform incubates young minds in the advanced materials space to promote technology thought leadership. It has the potential to shape breakthrough products and processes in the emerging field of advanced materials.”

Tata Steel Advanced Materials Research Center (TSAMRC) oversees the Company’s ‘Entrepreneurial Technology’ initiative in the new and emerging materials domain and has been organizing this initiative since 2019. Starting at the IIT Madras campus, the program has grown to a pan-India level and spans academic institutions and leading research center for many years. MaterialNEXT has been instrumental in expanding TSAMRC’s technology portfolio.

MaterialNEXT 4.0 will last five months in three phases: Selection (Idea Selection), Performance (Idea Development) and Final (Idea Evaluation). Post registration by the team, the Selection Phase is a 2 stage process of online screening followed by a discussion-cum-evaluation stage, conducted by subject matter experts. The finals will be held on Technology Day, May 11, 2023.

In addition to mentoring and incubation support from TSAMRC during the event idea development phase, internal and external subject matter experts will participate in the various phases of the event. The winning and runner-up teams of each track will receive monetary awards as well as funding offers for the most promising concepts to be developed into long-term joint ventures.
