The commercial activities scheduled at the Visakhapatnam Airport at the Vizag Naval Airfield will be completed for a period of 30 years and for the conversion of the entire 372.72 acres of land of the AAI in Vizag Civil Enclave to modified for AAI
Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam International Airport, which is currently used for defense and civil aviation, will go the way of Begumpet Airport while the Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district will be operational.
The airport in Visakhapatnam, which recently completed the construction of a second terminal by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), has limitations for increasing flights for civil aircraft despite the availability of some cars.
In fact, aviation advisory committee members K Vijay Mohan and O Naresh Kumar are pushing for increasing the number of domestic flights and introducing international flights to Kua Lumpur, Dubai, Bangkok and other places since the removal of Covid-19 restrictions.
However, it will become a barrier for Visakhapatnam International Airport when the Bhogapuram airport is proposed to be built by GMR Group under the PPP mode, about 40 km from the city, to work.
After getting permission from the AP High Court on the acquisition of a piece of land, which was claimed by some farmers, YSRCP regional coordinator and TTD Chairman YV Subba Reddy during his visit to Vizianagaram said that the work on the airport will soon be started by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited (GAL).
The Bhogapuram Airport will cost over Rs 2,500 crore and Visakhapatnam has not had an airport for 30 years, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Gen VK Singh (retd) said on Monday. in response to a question by MP GVL Narasimha Rao in the Rajya Sabha.
The Government of India gave ‘site approval’ to the Government of Andhra Pradesh (GoAP) in January, 2016 for the development of the Bhogapuram airport. Subsequently, in-principle approval for the project was granted by the GoI to AP in October, 2016.
The Minister said that the AP Government has taken up the construction of Bhogapuram Airport on PPP mode. The land required for the development of the airport is about 2203 acres and the development of phase I of the airport will be able to handle six million passengers per year. The initial estimated cost of building the airport is around Rs 2,500 crore. The time frame for completing the airport project depends on many factors such as land acquisition, obtaining permits and financing.
According to the MoU with the State government, the industrial activities in the Vizag Civil Enclave (which is 373 acres of the present Visakhapatnam airport) at the present Vizag Naval Airport are slated to close. for a period of 30 years and for the conversion of a total of 372.72 hectares. The land acquired by AAI in Vizag Civil Enclave will be transferred for AAI with permission to use the said land for any purpose without any limitation, the Union Minister informed.
