A well-appointed garden space for year-round use is a dream for many – and South Wales businesses are turning that dream into a reality.
4U Garden Room design, build, and install a variety of high-quality summer homes that can serve as self-catering garden spaces, offices, gyms, bars, or lodgings.
The Ebbw Vale-based company has ambitious plans to break the million pound turnover mark in three years and to grow its workforce to 20 in that time. The business received a £1000 Kickstart Plus grant which is co-managed by Tata Steel subsidiary UKSE and Blaenau Gwent Council.
Managing Director Wayne Dix says he’s been cultivating the idea for the venture for several years, and the move toward working from home during Lockdown gave it extra momentum to get things up and running.
Strong demand from clients across the UK for eco-friendly structures that extend home into gardens. And Mr Dix is confident that lodges can play an important role in future tourism, especially in locations that have traditionally offered caravan accommodation.
“Caravans are being replaced in many places by self-catering lodges like ours which are much more comfortable and energy efficient. Our buildings have a long life expectancy and utilize renewable energy from solar panels, and we are proud to be part of the Green Growth Pledge.
“We are looking to expand over the next few years and are targeting £1.2 million in turnover over three years, and expanding the team to around 20 staff,” he said.
All cottages are individually designed to suit their location and to customer specifications, and come with a ten year warranty.
Howard Thompson from UKSE said: “This is an excellent example of our work with Blaenau Gwent Council providing timely support to local businesses with great potential that will create high quality jobs. We hope that this business will always be successful as it grows and develops.”
Councilman John Morgan, Cabinet Member of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, Place and Regeneration, said: “Garden Spaces 4U’s design utilizes renewable energy and is environmentally friendly in its construction which is ideal for helping to reduce our carbon footprint.
“There are many different configurations available from the domestic, business and tourist variety that are good for our economy. A strong product portfolio combined with changing work and leisure activities offers the potential for further business growth. I want to wish them success for the future.”
